    Social media and other types of communication are being exploited as platform for bigotry. Hate speech is not just a technological issue; but also a societal problem. It always harm individuals and societies. Restraining hate speech has become a critical challenge for governments universally. It poses a challenge for modern liberal societies, which are committed to both freedom of expression and social equality. Thus, there is an ongoing debate in those societies over whether and how hate speech should be regulated or censored.

    As there is no international definition of What is hate speech? and what is hateful? It will be controversial and disputed.

    Online hate speech includes:
    1. threats to an individual or group
    2. online abuse and cyberbullying
    3. words, images and videos that call for or glorify violence against a group
    4. encouraging others to commit hate crimes
    5. grossly offensive posts or comments
    6. trolling (posting offensive, upsetting or inflammatory comments online in an attempt to hurt and provoke a response)
    7. other online communication which could incite hatred towards a particular group or person.
    Degree of Hate Speech
    Assessment of hate speech is essential to make an informed decision about the type of action that one will undertake to a particular case- legal action, mobilizing action, support to the victim or no action at all. In order to assess hate speeches, there are a number of criteria that may help to find the degree of hate speech. The criteria includes:
    1. Content or Tone of expression-which covers the type of language used such as an insult or joke.
    2. The intent of the person making the statement- whether they mean to hurt someone or not.
    3. Target group.
    4. The context.
    5. The impact of the statement on individuals or society as a whole.

    1. Report it on the social media platform where bullying took place
    2. Block the ID
    3. If you think necessary then also take screenshots, upload it on twitter and tag city police.
    4. File a Complaint with the Cyber Crime Reporting Portal- www.cybercrime.gov.in or call at helpline number: 155260.
    Personal Opinion
    Hate speech is something which is threatening or to hurt somebody else. Hate speech is not merely abusive words. Also It can be in any form of expression against individual or a group or class of people such as caste, religion and ethnicity. It can be communicated using words, emojis, images, videos, memes and symbols. The Impact of Hate Speech includes human rights violation, terrorism, communal violence, polarization of communities and sections of the society, erosion of democratic values, mobocracy and mob lynching, hate crime,rape etc. So it is very much important for us to know how to avoid and react hate speech without affecting free speech. This is why we the team of Youth Online Learning Organisation has always focused on using social media to bring a social change has a new campaign #NoHateNovember and thus we strongly suggest you to never promote negativity online and expect people to treat you with positivity in person.
