North East Matters

    North East Matters

With the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, India is simultaneously facing another outbreak. the outbreak of racial discrimination against the people of North East India. Corona is not anymore a term for a disease, the ignorant society is using the term for our fellow citizens from the North East. The Northeast people are battling racism amid the coronavirus outbreak. They are facing harassment and violence over their looks. A question we need to ask ourselves, how are we treating our fellow citizens from Northeast India.

Campaign YOLO, a joint initiative of Sarvahitey and Social Media Matters has taken up this strenuous yet achievable task of eliminating all kinds of racial discrimination in India. The first and major step is to focus on discrimination against people from Northeast India. We have taken a pledge to fight against the racial outbreak in a simple yet impactful way. The campaign is called #NorthEastMatters. The campaign works through a network of 750-+ Facebook groups spread across India with a membership of over 7 lakh people to people.

North East India provides a rich heritage of culture and tradition yet it fails to get its due recognition. The campaign #NorthEastMatters focuses on each and every state that is a part of North East India to showcase its diverse culture. I have been involved at a deeper level within the campaign through organising flood relief efforts in Assam. As an organisation,Sarvahitey has been involved in Assam flood relief operations for the past 4 years. YOLO has helped ensure the Covid 19 pandemic didn’t stop our work. This year,I initiated a collaboration program with different student collectives and organisations who were working on ground. Our North East Matters campaign will slowly reach each and every district across the North East Region through our libraries as well as our relief efforts.
